Same Sex Marriage

2 Jul

I didn’t think much of the legalization of gay marriages. I just thought, “yay what a boom to the economy” and “people will be more accepting of gay marriages in society.” But what really struck me was a comment that a gay pastor said on the news: “no longer will you see those teenagers who wanted or were thinking of committing suicide because now society is saying that there is nothing wrong with them and they are normal like everyone else.” That is what struck me. The impact on society after this important milestone in civil rights is so intense and powerful. No more discrimination. A step towards a reduction in hate crimes. Hope for young gay people. Just wow.

Then there’s the fact that my 26 year old cousin is gay and has lived for years with his boyfriend.  He even made it to my sister’s wedding by daring to get on an airplane from Washington just to see and join us on such a special day. He doesn’t have any papers. Jaime disappeared for a few years after his mom passed away. His dad brought him to the US to work, but after discovering that Jaime, at 15 years old, was gay, beat the lights out of Jaime. After contemplating suicide and depression, Jaime ran away and started a new life in a different state. Ironically, he has ended up working the grape fields for a winery just like our uncles at our grandpa’s ranch. I’m thankful for social media like facebook that has allowed family to stay in touch and so that we can support Jaime with his new life.

Then today see this image on the teevee. My sister tells me that she saw Chava and Bill on the teevee getting married. They were the first official couple to apply for a license and get married in Beverly Hills. Although Chava and I are not close, he is the first memory that I have of being in Mexico. Chava was the man who was mopping the floor and playing with my sister and myself with a bouncy ball at my uncle’s house. He is also the man that never cared what anyone said about him and continued his life. Yes, like many gay people he was severely depressed in a time period in his life. But he luckily met a man that has treated him and the people around Chava including my own my family with immense respect and admiration. Even when Chava and Bill briefly broke up, Bill still went back to Mexico on his own to visit Chava’s family and bring toys for the kids in his family. And my dad likes him because he is your “average” guy that likes muscle cars and rock music.  Chava is the more femenine of the two. He dresses like I used to dress in high school lol Plus he made an amazing Marie Antoniette with the white face powder and the Victorian Era dress for Halloween 3 years ago.

At the 0:25 mark of this news report, Chava and Bill exchange their wedding vows in front of the media. There’s also another video on the website that mentions how Bill arrives at 6:30am to camp out and be the first person in line to get a marriage. Of course, this was done while Chava was at home getting his beauty sleep.
