Elastic Bond live performance

22 Aug

Another band that has captured my radar: the Miami based Elastic Bond that mixes Spanish/English, DJ samples, bossa nova, jazz, soul, salsa, 60’s Any Whinehouse-ish feel etc. I finally found a video of them performing live at a radio station in Seattle.

The singer goes by Sofi Encanto is absolutely fantastic with her laidback vocals.

Ah y el guerito tocando la guitarra…. no pos wow!

I feel so relaxed listening to this band. I hope they can visit CA soon. In the meantime enjoy this band

Zooey Deschanel influence by Los Abandoned??

4 Aug

I was watching the movie “Yes Man!” with Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel and always have had a good laugh at the scence where Deschanel’s character performs with her band. This time I realized similarities between her band and another band that sounded familiar, but I couldn’t pinpoint… Los Abandoned? The now defunct band that opened for EVERYONE including Cafe Tacuba, Julieta Venegas, Molotov etc.???

I did some searching on youtube and sure enough there are some similarities. However, Los Abandoned broke up in 2007 and Yes Man premiered in 2009. Hmmm…

Lets see in “Yes Man” Deschannel’s band has a catchy 80’s beat with female high pitched vocals. Its a catchy song, but with hilarious lyrics! And the band is silly with seahorses on their head. Rewind a few years and you have Los Abandoned whose early compositions were easily inspired by 80’s beats and Maria del Pilar’s high pitched vocals. And we all know mid-Los Abandoned (circa 2004ish) performed dressed as the “Royal Tennenbaums” and Maria del Pilar performed with unique outfits. Los Abandoned was known for mixing in Spanish and English language together to create some interesting combinations. SOmetimes its not even Spanglish, but something different all together.

Hmmmm. Hmmm. You be the judge.

Maybe its this Los Abandoned cover of “Rock Lobster” that reminded me of them

This is Los Abandoned’s warmup song “Live and Direct” followed by “A La Mode”
