Los Tres Tristes Tigres

24 Jul

In the middle of all these health issues I have had, I ran into Los Tres Tristes Tigres and have become an instant fan. They are a trio of young musicians who parody Mexican pop culture into music. And they don’t just play their songs. They actually have comedic routines weaved into their performances. Every week they upload a new song on youtube based on current events. And every week they make me and thousands of followers laugh and smile. The even more amazing part is that they are incredibly versitile singers and musicians plus they cover different Latino genres. One minute they are doing cumbias, then norteñas, then covering Cafe Tacvba,  then corridos, then banda, then trio style music. Plus they are the first to use an iPad on the app “GarageBand” as an actual instrument. In fact Chuy uses an app called  “Accordeon” to play a digital accordeon. Yes! AND  AND their videos are always recorded live on one take so you can hear some mistakes here and there. I hope they come to the US one day because I would totally go to see them.

Here is their most famous video, a parody of Los Invasores de Nuevo Leon. In this song they refer to WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and all of the social media.

They also have “El Corrido de Donald Trump” “El Corrido de Memo Ochoa,”  “El Chingadazo” as a parady of “El Tucanazo”

One of my favorites is also a cover of OV7’s “Te Quiero Tanto” called “Te Pega tu Vieja” seen here:

My favorite of the three guys? Its Chuy the fluffy multi-instrumentalist that has the best facial expressions!

And my sister’s favorite “Ya Deja el Celular” with a live banda

This is a fabulous play on words and their ability to play around with the audience. This song is called “Amor de Ver-ano”

Detox retreats

12 Jul

Recently, I have been plagued with health problems. I am allergic to grass, oak trees, cats and some minor weeds. To “deal” with the symptoms I take Allegra, a nasal spray Flonase and eye drops for allergies. Last year I began allergy shots AKA immunotherapy. Essentially I go every week to get a dose of the 4 things I am allergic to. Then each week the shot dosage is higher and higher until I reach a certain dose. When I get there I stay on that those and eventually the goal is to become immune to the grass, cats, oak trees and minor weeds so that I do not have to take any medications in the long run. Of course this has been kicking my body’s ass. The medication makes me prone to colds and infections. So far I have had 4 colds this year and my sinuses are a mess. And what do doctors do to treat my infections? MORE medication.

To add to this lovely cocktail, my job has sucked massive ass in 2015. Stress, fatigue, and now recently minor anxiety have made its way to my every day life. I have literally spent all of my summer recovering from all  of these shenanigans.

About 2 months ago, my buddy Ruby went to a holistic retreat close to Guadalajara Mexico. It specializes in using food as therapy and water based therapy in an intense form to improve people’s health. Ruby suffers from lupus and inflammation of the body which causes the immune system to turn on itself. As an underground trova musician, I listened closely to one of her radio interviews where she explained her 12 day experience. Its almost like a summer/boot camp style environment. The camp goes for $88 per night which includes all food, teas, therapies, doctor supervision, and your own room. Its cheaper if you want to share with a stranger or more expensive if you want a bigger room and a king size bed. They also teach its guests how to each and combine certain fruits and vegetables. The day starts at 5am with a cold bath followed by a steam bath, food, lymphatic drainage exercises, food, lectures, genital baths (?!), clay therapy, food, tea time, food, mild exercise, another genital bath (?!?!), more therapy, cold bath, and followed by dinner at 8pm. By 9pm you are completely beat and will want to go to bed as the next day starts at 5am. Facebook users give this place very high reviews and have success stories written on the page.  Ruby tells me that the people who are there are stressed out and tired people from Mexico who go once a year. They swear on this place and the massive benefits. Ruby says her infammation was severely improved and she feels with much more energy than ever. Plus the place focuses on detox from all of the chemicals, medications, and  shit we put in our bodies on an every day basis.  It completely focuses on PHYSICAL health. The link to El Centro Naturista de Daniel Arreola can be found here. http://www.elgrullodar.com/

The other reasonably priced retreat (many exist in the USA, but they are spiritual retreats or cost something like $4000) is about 1.5 hours north of San Francisco. This place focuses also on detox, but on personal transformation, spiritual health as well. It focuses on detaching from the every day life in the woods. They do 100% organic juices and meals, herbal teas, yoga, mild exercise, massage, meditation, sauna use, visits to Hot Springs and nearby waterfalls, breathwork therapy. People can pay extra for foot reflexology, raw foods preparation class, craniosacral therapy and more. Here is link to the place: http://sacredspringsretreat.com/personal-retreats/

The problem is that its almost $1,000 more than El Centro Naturista de Daniel Arreola. And it doesn’t focus on the body as much as El Centro. This place is a more balanced locale: food, body, and mental health. However, this is also in the US. NOT in Mexico where El Chapo Guzman just escaped and may possibly escalate the drug cartel war. Makes me have many second thoughts about going to Guadalajara. But I do want to focus on my body. No harm in helping balance other aspects in our life like our body and mental health. But I would love to focus on my body first.  So yes, I have about a week to make up my mind before I have to make a choice. I would love to go before my vacation is over. What a great way to start the school year and clean my body and mind. Now the question: which one should I go to ??????????????????

11 Ways to Become the Person You love

11 Ways to Become the Person You Love

11 Ways to Love Yourself

You are powerful when you believe in yourself – when you know that you are capable of anything you put your mind to.  You are beautiful when your strength and determination shines as you follow your own path – when you aren’t disheveled by the obstacles along the way.  You are unstoppable when you let your mistakes educate you, as your confidence builds from experiences – when you know you can fall down, pick yourself up, and move forward.

Here are 11 ways to become the person you love.

  1. Stop judging, and appreciate the beauty within you. – Judging yourself is not the same as being honest with yourself.  When it comes to living as a compassionate, non-judgmental human being, the only challenge greater than learning to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, is learning to walk a lifetime comfortably in your own.  In every smile there is beauty.  In every heart there is love.  In every mind there is wisdom.  In every human being there is a soul, there is life, there is worth, and there is the ability to see all these things in everyone, including one’s self.  Read The Mastery of Love.
  2. Treat yourself the way you want others to treat you. – Accept yourself!  Insecurity is what’s ugly, not you.  Be you, just the way you are, in the beautiful way only you know how.  The way you treat yourself sets the standard for others.  You must love who you are or no one else will either.  And when you are truly comfortable in your own skin, not everyone will like you, but you won’t care about it one bit.
  3. Care less about who you are to others. – Don’t lose YOU in your search for acceptance by others.  Be aware that you will always appear to be a little less than some people prefer you to be, but that most people are unaware that you are so much more then what they see.  You are good enough just the way you are.  You have nothing to prove to anyone else.  Care less about who you are to others and more about who you are to yourself.
  4. Know your worth. – We often accept the love we think we deserve.  It makes no sense to be second in someone’s life, when you know you’re good enough to be first in someone else’s.
  5. Don’t rush intimate relationships. – Love is not about sex, going on fancy dates, or showing off.  It’s about being with a person who makes you happy in a way nobody else can.  You don’t need a perfect one, you just need someone who you can trust – who shows you that you’re the only one.  If you haven’t found true love yet, don’t settle.  There is someone out there who will love you unconditionally, even if it’s not the person you were initially hoping for.
  6. Let go of those who aren’t really there. – There are certain people who aren’t meant to fit into your life no matter how much you want them to.  And the only ones truly worthy of your love are the ones who stand with you through the hard times and laugh with you after the hard times pass.  Maybe a happy ending doesn’t include anyone else right now.  Maybe it’s just you, on your own, picking up the pieces and starting over, freeing yourself for something better in the future.  Maybe the happy ending is simply letting go.
  7. Forgive yourself and others. – Of all the things that can be stolen from you – your possessions, your youth, your health, your words, your rights – what no one can ever take from you is your freedom to choose what you will believe in, and who and what your heart will love going forward.  Life begins where your fear and resentment ends.  Just because someone hurt you yesterday, doesn’t mean you should hate the world, or start living life today in constant fear of being hurt tomorrow.  When you forgive yourself and others, and stop the inner imprisonment, you’re creating the love of your life. Read The Tao of Pooh.
  8. Focus on the positive. – Do not let the pain make you hopeless.  Do not let the negativity wear off on you.  Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness.  Even though others may disagree with you, take pride in the fact that you still know the world is a beautiful place.  Change your thoughts and you change your reality.  Our thoughts are the makers of our moods, the inventors of our dreams, and the creators of our will.  That is why we must sort through them carefully, and choose to respond only to those that will help us build the life we want, and the outlook we want to hold as we’re living it.
  9. Believe in the person you are capable of being. – The real purpose of your life is to evolve and grow into the whole person you are capable of being.  Have a mind that is open to everything and attached to nothing.  Change really is always possible – there is no ability that can’t be developed with experience.  Don’t ever let your negative beliefs stand in the way of your own improvement.  Read A New Earth.
  10. Work on goals you believe in. – Never put off or give up on a goal that’s important to you.  Not because you still have tomorrow to start or try again, but because you may not have tomorrow at all.  Life is shorter than it sometimes seems.  Follow your heart today.
  11. Keep looking and moving straight forward. – Moving on doesn’t mean you have forgotten; it means you have accepted what happened in the past and choose to continue living in the present.  Moving on doesn’t mean you’re giving up; it means you’re giving yourself another chance by making a choice to be happy rather than hurt.  Through all the problems you have faced, the burdens weighing down on your shoulders, the pain in your heart, you have only one thing to say, “I survived and I now know better for next time.”

In the end, loving yourself is about enjoying your life, trusting your own feelings, taking chances, losing and finding happiness, cherishing the memories, and learning from the past.  Sometimes you have to stop worrying, wondering, and doubting.  Have faith that things will work out, maybe not exactly how you planned, but just how it’s meant to be.

Boquitas Pintadas

1 Jul

Its been years since I have picked up a book and read on a leisurely basis. What got me to read again? Gloria Trevi. The book is called “Girl Trouble: The True Saga of Superstar Gloria Trevi and the Secret Teenage Sex Cult  that Stunned the World” by Christopher McDougall seen here: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/228273.Girl_Trouble

This book was so addicting that I was hardly able to put the book down. Its incredibly entertaining, disturbing, psychological brain twister involving so many of Mexico’s best known singers, public figures, and analysis of the music industry. Its an awesome novela in a book. I must warn you that Mr. McDougall is fabulous at making you think that you are in the room when all of these events are happening. He almost makes you think that he was the author of these events or at least a sports caster giving the play by play of the events in Gloria, Sergio Andrade, Karina Yapor and Aline Hernandez’s life. Mr. McDougall has clearly spent a long time interviewing just about everyone involved in this crazy scandal and even doing research of television, radio interviews and newspaper articles about Gloria and her scandal. Its an addicting book, but at the end I questioned what was real and what was a publicity stunt. And I still question the truth of Gloria and Mary Boquitas role in the recruitment and abuse of many 12 year old girls that served as Sergio Andrade’s sex slaves for many years.

Apart from all these incredible yet probably realistic stories is Gloria’s beginnings as a performer in an all girl rock/pop group called Boquitas Pintadas. The book describes this project as a talented yet failed group of girls for Sergio Andrade. The truth: the singer and piano player were secretly dating each other, Mary Boquitas (bass) had secretly married Sergio Andrade as a 15 year old girl, and he saw no talent in Gloria. In addition, he drilled these girls so hard in one year on music theory, classical music, and stage presence that the group burnt out. After a quick Youtube search I found 2 videos of “Boquitas Pintadas” and let me tell you I was in awe for many reasons.

#1 They were WAAAAAYYYY ahead of their time.

Sergio Andrade wanted to capitalize on the the all girl group craze in the US such as the Bangles and Go-Go’s. He failed to realize that Mexico was not ready to see women playing instruments. In fact, Mexico isn’t really STILL not ready to see an all girl band in the mainstream. Do you see one now?

In addition, their outfits are too unique. There’s no uniformity among the group. Even the poor piano player looks awkward standing up as she is playing.

Their songs?? Absolutely genius. The asshole of Sergio Andrade was a musical genius. His songs were very catchy, Mary Boquitas was a perfect backup singer who was perfectly in tune, Gloria’s parts as synthesizer were perfectly placed, the drumming was quick energetic and catchy… in other words the songs were fantastic. The second mellower song was too mellow and dramatic for an upcoming band PLUS it sounds like Gloria and slow Alejandra Guzman’s music from 1990. Boquitas Pintadas premiered in 1985.  WAYYY ahead of their time.

#2 They were not ALL seasoned performers.

Gloria looks like a little girl who is too excited to be on TV the first time. Mary Boquitas looks amazing singing, dancing, and playing tough to play bass lines (a natural performer) , singer is too stiff…. in other words they lacked the unity as a GROUP.  They were also plagued by horrible sound. The singer’s voice in inaudible the first few seconds of the song. The guitar sounds horrible. The bass in non existent. The drums sound like they are going to fall apart. The synthesizer was way too loud….. Needless to say this was their first and last performance on “Siempre en Domingo”.

In all here are 2 videos of “Boquitas Pintadas”

“Quiero Volver a Ti”

“Se Hace Noche” – Clearly Gloria wrote this song and you can almost hear her voice singing this song instead of Mary Boquitas. Mary Boquitas is a LOVELY performer and is meant to be on stage! She was 15 with no stage experience before this performance.
